Summer is a time for kids to be kids, there is no argument about that. Being a kid should not mean plugged into devices, gaming systems, computers and television all summer. I think back to when I was a kid during summer break (we will not discuss how long ago that was) and how I spent it. Outside playing from sun up to sun down and falling asleep with a book in my hand at night. As a mom, I fear that technology is stealing away some of that enjoyment for reading, the outdoors, drawing, riding a bike and other “unwired” activities. I began searching out some summer checklists for my three boys. Setting ground rules for technology at the beginning of summer break will give them clear expectations. Here are a few that I liked.
I love the idea of nature scavenger hunts. An activity that we can do together and be completely away from our devices. We are fortunate to live in an area with many hiking trails and I plan to utilize those this summer. I would love to see your summer scavenger hunt ideas.
Last summer, kindness rocks were a big hit with my boys. I must admit I found myself painting rocks well after everyone had gone to bed. It is a unique relaxing and creative outlet. We all enjoyed hiding the rocks around town and waiting to see pictures of our rocks posted on Facebook. Check on Facebook for you local area rock groups. You simply paint rocks, write on the back your local group name and watch on Facebook for it to be found and treasured by someone.
Here are a few we painted last summer. I must saw the unicorn was a proud moment for me as I love being creative but lack artistic talent.
